Top Health Concerns for Men

June is Men’s Health Month. Men often avoid the doctor or find it unnecessary to check on their health. Societal norms also discourage men from openly discussing their health concerns, leading to delayed diagnosis and inadequate preventive care. AFSPA hopes to encourage men to take charge of their health this month!

Mental Health

Men’s mental health is a growing concern, with conditions such as depression and anxiety affecting millions worldwide. We know that 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness in the United States every year.  According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), men are less likely to seek help for mental health issues due to stigmas surrounding masculinity. Breaking these barriers and encouraging open conversations about mental health is crucial. Seeking therapy, practicing stress management techniques, and maintaining strong social connections are essential for overall well-being. You can do all these things through Foreign Service Benefit Plan’s Mental Wellness Programs.

Through programs like myStrength, men can receive help for depression, stress, and anxiety. This program is personalized just for you and uses evidence-based resources to achieve mental wellness. FSBP also offers telehealth services for mental health and other programs that can help you with your mental health struggles.

Heart Health

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among men globally. The American Heart Association (AHA) emphasizes the importance of regular exercise, a balanced diet, and routine check-ups to prevent cardiovascular issues. High blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and obesity are significant risk factors for heart disease. By adopting a healthy lifestyle and managing these risk factors, men can significantly reduce their chances of developing heart-related problems. If you haven’t gone to the doctor in a while and are unsure about the state of your health, FSBP rewards members after completing a health risk assessment. This questionnaire evaluates your health and quality of life. It provides a snapshot of your current health status. If you want a more in-depth analysis, you can also earn a $100 wellness reward for receiving a physical exam and biometric screening through FSBP’s Wellness Rewards Program.

Prostate Health

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, emphasizing the need for proactive measures. The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends that men discuss the benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening with their healthcare providers, starting at age 50 for most men. Screening may begin earlier for those at higher risk, such as African American men or those with a family history of prostate cancer. Regular check-ups and awareness about potential symptoms can aid in early detection and successful treatment.

In a recent webinar, Dr. Kelly Ruel from Aetna spoke about the importance of getting screened for prostate cancer. He also spoke about colon cancer, sexual health, and men’s health.

Testicular Health:

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15 to 35. The Testicular Cancer Society suggests that self-examination is an important tool for early detection. Men should regularly check for any lumps, swelling, or changes in the testicles. If any abnormalities are noticed, prompt medical attention is crucial. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and avoiding excessive alcohol and tobacco use can contribute to overall testicular health.

Sexual Health:

Sexual health is a vital aspect of overall well-being for men. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent condition that can significantly impact a man’s quality of life. The Mayo Clinic recommends regular check-ups to address any underlying health issues that may contribute to ED. Lifestyle factors such as maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and managing stress can also promote better sexual health.

Prioritizing men’s health is a collective responsibility that involves breaking down societal barriers, encouraging open conversations, and providing accessible healthcare resources. By addressing mental health concerns, adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle, being proactive about prostate and testicular health, and promoting sexual well-being, men can take significant steps towards a healthier and more fulfilling life.
