From the CEO - June 2025

With June upon us, we acknowledge two significant themes: Men’s Health Month and Pride Month. This occasion presents an excellent opportunity to encourage men to prioritize their health and well-being while supporting the LGBTQ+ community. AFSPA offers a wealth of valuable resources, ways to assist you in your wellness journey while being rewarded, and ways to navigate the complexities of the federal landscape. Together, let’s strive to promote health and acceptance so we can live and feel better together.

Men’s Health Month

Father’s Day is near, making it a perfect time to encourage the important men in your life to prioritize their health. Research shows that men tend to neglect regular health checkups more than women do, and guys, we have to do better for ourselves and those we care about.  Identifying health issues early can play a crucial role in improving overall well-being. As a member of the Foreign Service Benefit Plan (FSBP), you can take advantage of our wellness rewards program. By completing a health risk assessment (HRA), participating in an annual physical and biometric screening, and engaging in other healthy action activities—such as getting a flu shot, completing screenings for breast cancer, cervical cancer, or colorectal cancer, tracking your physical activity, and more—you can earn up to $400 in wellness rewards. Learn more at afspa.org/wellness.

Pride Month

June marks Pride Month. At AFSPA, we wholeheartedly support the LGBTQ+ community and advocate for the inclusion and acceptance of everyone. FSBP members have access to programs and benefits designed to meet the mental health needs of our LGBTQ+ community. Discover more about our mental wellness programs. Additionally, follow our social media and listen to the AFSPA Talks podcast, where we will host discussions with partners about topics and resources relevant to the LGBTQ+ community in the Foreign Service. Search for “AFSPA Talks” on your favorite podcast platform or visit afspa.org/podcast.

Federal Uncertainties and Your Mental Health

Recent changes in the federal workforce and ongoing uncertainty have led to mental health issues for both federal employees and their families. Reactions such as stress, anxiety, fear, anger, and worry are entirely understandable, but you do not have to navigate these challenges by yourself. I encourage you to utilize available resources through community organizations, employee assistance programs, and your health plan benefits.

Our recent AFSPA Talks podcast episode focuses on the enduring partnership between the Foreign Service Benefit Plan and the Truman Group. During our discussion, Diane Nickeson-Mendheim, MSW, LCSW, explains how expatriates can access care from the Truman Group for various mental and behavioral health needs. To learn more about the Truman Group, visit https://trumangroup.com. For more information on FSBP’s mental wellness programs, visit our website.

Beginning in mid-June and lasting for approximately five weeks, the AFSPA office on L Street NW that has been our home for a decade, will receive a fresh coat of paint and some new carpeting. We will not be able to meet with members in person during that time, but we will remain available by phone and email.

Lastly, stay updated on everything AFSPA through our website’s newsfeedblogsnewsletterspodcasts, and social media channels (@afspacares). We discuss a variety of engaging topics across all platforms. I hope you and your family have a safe and healthy summer. As always, thank you for your trust and for allowing us to serve you.
