Dear AFSPA Member,
As we start a new school year, it’s important to focus on our children’s health and financial security. This month is a good reminder to schedule health check-ups, look into life insurance options, and monitor cholesterol levels. Additionally, recent federal employment changes and the ongoing uncertainty can be frustrating and confusing. I am resharing some information to help if you’re affected. We’re here to support you.
Back to School Health Check
Since children grow quickly, monitoring their developmental milestones is crucial. Regular check-ups confirm they are progressing well and ensure immunizations are current. These visits are ideal for identifying and addressing health concerns early, promoting their overall health and academic success. For additional tips and information, read our recent Back to School Health Check blog, which offers practical advice for parents and guardians to help kids start the school year healthy.
Regarding immunizations, we are monitoring developments in approvals and recommendations for all members. Please visit our website and follow our social media channels for any updates on coverage and availability.
Life Insurance Awareness Month
September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. It is a great time to review your current policies and ensure you have enough coverage to protect your loved ones. Life insurance is a key part of financial security if the unexpected happens. It’s important to understand the different types of life insurance and choose a plan that fits your needs and budget. Don’t wait—use this month to take steps toward securing your family’s future. We’re hosting a webinar with Prudential Pathways on September 16th to discuss why life insurance matters. Sessions are at 8 am, 1 pm, and 6 pm. Register here. For more info about AFSPA’s various life insurance plans, visit afspa.org/life.
National Cholesterol Education Month
This month, we highlight the importance of managing cholesterol to protect heart health and prevent illness. High cholesterol is a major risk for heart disease, a leading cause of death in the U.S. I encourage you to get your cholesterol levels checked, understand how cholesterol affects your health, and strive to adopt healthier lifestyle choices. Whether through diet, exercise, or medication, there are many effective ways to manage cholesterol levels. Foreign Service Benefit Plan (FSBP) members can access wellness programs and earn $100 after an annual exam and biometric screening, plus $75 after completing a health risk assessment (HRA). You can use these tools as a gateway to coaching and support programs that will help you live better and feel better.
Federal Employment Changes
In June, we sent out a special message to inform Federal employees about important updates regarding changes in their employment status, whether transitioning from active duty to retirement or leaving Federal service. This message provides detailed information and clarifications to help you understand how these employment changes can impact your health insurance coverage. With the end of the fiscal year approaching, we know some people will soon face a change in their status. For your convenience, here is the link to the original message, serving as a helpful reminder of the key points and your options during this transition. Whether retired, continuing to serve, or moving on to a new chapter, we at AFSPA thank you for your service.
