Supporting Your Mental Health During Uncertain Times

In times of global uncertainty, it’s normal to feel increased stress, anxiety, and emotional fatigue. For members of the Foreign Service community, especially those stationed overseas or who have family members serving overseas, global events can feel especially personal. Working in high-pressure environments, distance from family, and constant exposure to news can take a toll. That’s why prioritizing your mental health is essential, especially during times like these.

Understanding the Impact of Global Events

Ongoing news updates, social media, and daily conversations about conflict can lead to an increase in stress, uncertainty, and emotional exhaustion. Our members who are serving overseas may also experience additional challenges, such as being far from family and familiar support systems, working in demanding or rapidly changing environments, navigating cultural or regional tensions, and/or managing personal concerns while maintaining professional responsibilities. Once you recognize these pressures, which are just a few, then you’re at the first step toward protecting your mental health.

Stress can show up in different ways. Some people may have difficulty sleeping or concentrating, while others may experience feelings of being overwhelmed or anxious about global events, increased irritability, and/or trouble disconnecting from news and social media.

Simple Ways to Manage Stress

You don’t have to stay in a state of stress. Small actions can make a meaningful difference in your mental health during stressful periods.

  • Limit news exposure: Stay informed but set boundaries for how often you check updates.
  • Stay connected: Reach out to family and friends regularly.
  • Maintain a regular routine: Prioritize sleep, exercise, and healthy meals.
  • Take breaks: Step away from work or the news coverage to help reset your mind.

When to Seek Additional Support

If stress begins to interfere with your daily life, it may be time to seek professional support. This can look like:

  • Persistent anxiety or panic
  • Difficulty functioning at work
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Trouble sleeping over extended periods

For members stationed overseas, these challenges can be even more intense. Being away from family, navigating time zone differences, and working in high-pressure or rapidly changing environments can intensify stress.

Quick Grounding Techniques

When stress feels overwhelming, try:

  • Take 5 slow, deep breaths
  • Step away from the news
  • Focus on your immediate surroundings
  • Go for a short walk
