Dear AFSPA Member,
As we move into summer, June reminds us that maintaining good health is about more than reacting to issues as they arise. It is about having the right resources and support in place along the way. This year, our theme, “Better Tools: Better Health,” reflects our commitment to helping members access meaningful resources that empower healthier choices and improved well-being. Whether through preventive care, wellness resources, or practical health guidance, the right tools can help you take charge of your health journey.
Men’s Health Month
June is Men’s Health Month. That means that it’s time for my annual reminder that we, men, lag behind in so many areas of health. Getting preventive care, seeking timely care when an issue arises, and utilizing mental health resources. We need to do better, so please take this as a vital reminder to men everywhere to focus on their health and well-being. Many health issues can arise silently over time, so regular check-ups and preventive screenings are essential tools for maintaining long-term health and a great place to start if it’s been a while since you sought any kind of care.
As a member of the Foreign Service Benefit Plan (FSBP), you have access to resources designed to help support you in your health journey. Completing a Health Risk Assessment (HRA), participating in your annual physical and biometric screenings, and engaging in eligible healthy action activities such as getting a flu shot, completing screenings for breast cancer, colorectal cancer, tracking your physical activity, and more are examples of tools available to help you stay informed and proactive about your health. If you’re a little overwhelmed about finding an in-person provider and are not sure where to start, check out the Virtual Primary Care option (or Primary 360) through Teladoc Health. This virtual-first option provides you with a care team that partners with you in your health journey. Available to members in the U.S., the Teladoc Health app lets you find your provider and schedule your first appointment (usually within 10 days).
In support of Men’s Health Month, this month’s AFSPA Talks podcast will focus on men’s health, featuring episodes on important preventive screenings and mental health resources. We’ll also host an AFSPA Live Q&A session with a Teladoc representative on the last Thursday of this month to discuss virtual healthcare options and answer your questions. Stay tuned and be sure to subscribe to our AFSPA Talks podcast and YouTube channel.
Pride Month
June is also Pride Month, a time to recognize and celebrate diversity while reinforcing the importance of creating supportive and inclusive communities. Health extends beyond physical wellness. It also includes emotional and mental well-being.
Having the right support systems and resources is another example of how better tools can lead to better health. FSBP offers access to mental wellness programs that help members of all ages and their families support their overall well-being.
Summer Travel Health Tips
For many families, summer also brings travel plans and opportunities to explore new places. Preparing for your health while traveling can be just as important as planning your destination.
Consider these travel health tools before your next trip:
Pack enough prescription medications for your trip, plus a few extra days if possible
Keep health and insurance information readily available
Stay hydrated, especially in warmer climates
Protect yourself from sun exposure with sunscreen and protective clothing
Review any health recommendations or vaccination guidance for your destination
Preparation is one of the simplest but most effective tools for protecting your health while away from home.
