Dear AFSPA Member,
October is an important time to check in on your health and benefits and prepare for the months ahead. With the Federal Benefits Open Season approaching, respiratory virus season underway, and additional coverage opportunities available to AFSPA members, now is a good time to review the resources and benefits available to you and your family. This month, I’m highlighting a few important ways AFSPA can help you stay informed, protected, and prepared.
Federal Benefits Open Season runs from November 9 through December 14, 2026, giving federal employees and retirees an important opportunity to review their benefits and make changes to their health, dental, vision, and flexible spending account coverage without a qualifying life event. It is a great time to evaluate your current coverage and consider what best meets your needs for the year ahead.
Throughout Open Season, AFSPA will participate in benefits fairs and briefings, as well as host several webinars with live Q&A opportunities. We will also keep you informed through the Foreign Service Benefit Plan (FSBP) Open Season packet, emails, podcasts, and other updates highlighting important benefit changes and enhancements for 2027. Stay connected with us throughout Open Season, so you have the information and resources you need to make informed decisions about your benefits.
As we head into fall and winter, staying up to date on recommended vaccinations can help protect you and your family during respiratory virus season. According to the CDC, it takes about two weeks after receiving a flu vaccine for protective antibodies to develop, and annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months and older, with rare exceptions.
FSBP covers eligible flu and RSV vaccines at 100% when you use an in-network provider in the United States or receive care overseas. As an added benefit, FSBP members age 18 and older can earn a $25 wellness reward for receiving a flu shot. Talk with your health care provider about which vaccines are recommended for you.
AFSPA members have an exclusive opportunity to enroll in additional coverage through Group Enhanced Life (GEL) and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D), both issued by The Prudential Life Insurance Company of America. GEL provides up to $50,000 in guaranteed life insurance coverage, while AD&D provides up to $600,000 in guaranteed coverage for covered accidental death or certain serious accidental injuries. Enrollment by November 15 means no medical exam or health questions. Whether you use them to supplement existing coverage or strengthen your overall benefits portfolio, these options can provide additional financial protection for you and your loved ones. Don’t miss this limited enrollment opportunity. Review your coverage options at afspa.org/life.
