The Importance of Life Insurance for the Younger Generation

Many believe life insurance is solely for older adults or in the event of death; however, it has been shown to be beneficial when purchased early in life. It’s also often associated with marriage, children, homeownership, or retirement planning. For younger adults, it can be easy to view life insurance as something to think about years from now. However, life insurance can be an important part of financial planning at any age.

Life Insurance Is About More Than Final Expenses

For younger generations building careers, paying down debt, supporting family members, or starting families, an unexpected loss can create a significant financial burden.

Life insurance can provide financial support to help beneficiaries manage expenses such as funeral costs, outstanding bills, household expenses, or other financial responsibilities. It may also help replace income that family members depend on.

Even for someone who is single or does not have children, life insurance may still be worth considering. Parents, siblings, partners, or other loved ones could be left responsible for certain expenses after a death. Planning ahead can help reduce that financial strain.

Starting the Conversation Earlier

Thinking about life insurance earlier in adulthood also provides an opportunity to consider how your financial responsibilities may change over time.

A first job may eventually become a long-term career. Renting may turn into homeownership. Relationships, children, caregiving responsibilities, and financial goals may change, too. Reviewing life insurance as part of your overall financial plan can help ensure your coverage reflects the people and responsibilities that matter most to you.

For federal employees, it is also important to understand what coverage you already have and whether additional coverage may be appropriate. Employer-sponsored life insurance can provide valuable protection, but your individual financial needs may extend beyond that coverage.

AFSPA Life Insurance Options

Through the American Foreign Service Protective Association’s (AFSPA) Ancillary Insurance Programs (AIP), eligible members have access to life insurance options designed to provide additional financial protection for themselves and their families. AFSPA members under 65 can apply for one of three life insurance plans throughout the year without waiting for a traditional Open Season.

One option that may be particularly relevant for younger AFSPA members is Group Enhanced Life (GEL). GEL can be purchased as stand-alone coverage option or used to supplement Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance (FEGLI). Coverage amounts range from $50,000 to $600,000, and the plan includes an Accelerated Benefit Option (ABO), which pays you benefits while you are still living. ABO living benefits are designed to help your family cover the costly financial burdens due to any terminal or chronic illness you may face. GEL coverage may also be maintained after leaving government service, subject to plan requirements and age limitations.

AFSPA also offers Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage. This plan provides benefits for covered accidental deaths and certain serious injuries, including loss of limbs, paralysis, speech, or hearing. Coverage is available up to $600,000, and eligible members may enroll without medical underwriting or a review of their health history.

For eligible employees of participating agencies, AFSPA’s Immediate Benefit Plan (IBP) is designed to provide beneficiaries with quicker access to funds following a covered death. Benefit processing begins within two business days after AFSPA receives official notice of death from the employee’s agency. The benefit can help families address immediate expenses such as funeral arrangements, medical bills, or travel costs.

Protecting the Life You’re Building

For younger adults, life insurance is not about expecting the worst. It is about recognizing that the financial decisions made today can help protect loved ones tomorrow.

As your career, family, and financial responsibilities grow, your insurance needs may change too. Taking time now to understand your available options can be a meaningful step toward building a stronger financial foundation.
