Why Massage Therapy Is About More Than Relaxation

The Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals created Massage is for EveryBody Week 30 years ago to raise awareness for massage and bodywork. The ABMP believes that the mission for Massage is for EveryBody is “grounded in sharing proven benefits of massage and bodywork, advocating for an earned place in the integrative model, and showcasing our highest level of professionalism and ethics.” Massage is for EveryBody week is July 19 – 25, 2026, and we hope our members will take part to enjoy the many benefits of massage therapy!

Benefits of Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is an incredible tool for physical AND mental health. Massages are a great way to help with specific medical conditions, such as sports injuries, soft tissue strains, postoperative care, nerve pain, and more. Massages can also decrease stress and help with anxiety and depression. It is no longer an exclusive activity offered only at spas, but is now considered a vital tool for improving your overall well-being.

The physical benefits of massages include improved flexibility, reduced pain and soreness, a stronger immune system, better sleep, and faster recovery between workouts. The mental benefits of a massage include more energy, improved mood and relaxation, lower stress levels, and less anxiety.

FSBP Massage Benefits

At health fairs or while chatting with members, AFSPA employees often hear that the alternative benefits are one of FSBP members’ favorite parts of the Foreign Service Benefit Plan. That’s because all eligible members enrolled in FSBP can receive 50 massage therapy, 50 chiropractic, and 50 acupuncture visits, covered up to $75 per visit, per calendar year. That’s four massages each month!

The only requirement is that members in the U.S. visit a licensed massage therapist. The itemized bill must include the provider’s Massage Therapy Licensed Number (if a United States provider and applicable per state law). You must pay upfront for the services and submit an itemized bill for reimbursement. This service is also available for members living or visiting abroad.

The following information is needed on an itemized bill for reimbursement:

  • Patient’s name
  • Patient’s date of birth
  • Patient’s ID number
  • Provider/massage therapist name and business address
  • License or certification number (if a United States provider and applicable per state law)
  • Date of each service
  • Description of service rendered
  • Cost for each service
  • Copy of your paid receipt

As we celebrate Massage is for Everybody Week, take the opportunity to treat yourself or a loved one to a rejuvenating massage. Let the skilled hands of a trained and licensed massage therapist work their magic!
